The Punjab government has announced an ambitious project to convert all stations on the Lahore Metro’s Orange Line to solar power , in a bid to reduce energy costs and promote renewable energy sources in the province.

This project is part of a broader green energy transition strategy in Pakistan. According to provincial authorities, using solar energy to power the stations will not only reduce dependence on fuel, but also to reduce the carbon footprint of the urban transport system.

The provincial Minister of Transport stressed that this conversion represents a major step towards a future, addedmake savingson monthly electricity bills, which are currently risingmfor the metro.

Solar panels will be installed on the roofs of each station, and an energy storage system will maintain power supply even during cloudy periods or at night. The project is expected to be completed by 2026 , according to initial estimates.

The initiative has been widely welcomed by environmentalists and conservationists, who see it as a model for other public infrastructure in Pakistan.
